Please educate me a little on this but if a country has a currency that is sub US Dollar value why wouldn’t they slap on a little tariff to make up the difference or “level the playing field”?
For example, Canadians as of today, have to spend $142.88 to purchase $100 of US products ( current exchange rate). The tariff on those products should be 42.88% just to make up exchange rate difference? But…. Since we or whomever is valuing products at the US dollar values, we or whomever would jack the price up being the exporters pay the tariffs not the importers but in essence we eventually pay due to price increases.
Since WW11, what other way is there to try and get “even” other than tariffs for countries trying to compete with the US dollar?
Take Bangledesh for example. Trumps chart shows them at a 74% tariff. It is one of many “textile countries” who manufactures t-shirts, clothing, etc that the US will not do here for that cheap. If I was them why not? They know most US citizens would refuse to produce a product for the long hours low pay they get there even if a factory was dropped here.
