That’s pretty much the same experience I’ve had although mine seem to alternate between grey and black calves randomly. This year I had a Charolais give birth in the night and the calf disappeared before I ever saw it. It complicated the search because I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for. Had fingers crossed that the calf was black because they’re so much easier to spot in grass and stubble. Thankfully I found a black calf roaming the neighbor’s wheat stubble 1.5 miles away the next day and it did end up being hers.
