I use a draw knife and a hand grinder to shape the handle to get it all the way through and tight. The best way to draw the head on to the handle is to hit the end of the handle with a rubber mallet. If you didn't get a wooden wedge with the handle you can use a window shim from the lumber yard.
The best way I have found is to have the head up and drop the bottom of your hammer handle on the concrete floor or a solid steel table, works better than any pounding.
